T he engine is of the centre column type. The design resembles that of the type of engine made by William Fairburn in the period 1840 - 1850. The very earliest practises of the use of the engine house building as part of the steam engine structure soon gave way to the development by the engineers of the day of self-contained engines, the beam engines being the first of these in all its variations.
